At the turn of the 20th Century, European countries dominated the list of countries of birth for Oregon residents born outside of the U.S., though China ranked second only to Germany.
By mid-century, China was no longer among the top five countries of birth, but the U.S.S.R. was included.
Mexico and Vietnam first appeared among the five leading countries of birth in the 1980 Census.
Mexico has been the leading country of birth since the 1990 Census; since 2000 it has accounted for about 40 percent of the state’s foreign-born population.
China reappeared in the list of leading countries of birth in the 21st Century, and no European country is among the top five.
Canada has consistently been among the top five countries of birth for foreign-born Oregon residents.
